Elizabeth Warren has a survey posted on her website to allow us the opportunity to let her know what’s important to us. Here is what I entered in the comments box.
Dear Ms. Warren,
I am going to keep this as short and sweet as possible. We are a country of laws. We are also a free country with a constitution. Every amendment in that constitution is as important as every other amendment. We have laws against killing others. We also have a number of other laws that are designed to keep firearms out of the hands of dangerous people. Statistically, these laws, when they are enforced, have been pretty downright effective when you consider the shear millions of Americans that have firearms compared to the those that have used them to harm others. Ask any expert and they will tell you that it is not the tool that is the problem, it is the criminal with the tool.
We are sick and tired of having to look over our shoulders in fear that there is a criminal lurking around the corner wanting to harm us. But the reality is, evil is among us. It always will be. And, it will never go away. Never. It is simply a fact of life. So, here’s the thing. The laws we have today have been unable to stop evil people from harming others. But, they have been extremely effective at maintaining order among law abiding citizens. Creating more gun laws will do nothing more than restrict the law abiding citizen and do nothing more than make it easier for the criminal to practice his craft. Why? Because now you have taken the law abiding citizen’s ability away to defend herself. How does that make any sense? It doesn’t make any sense, and you know it. It doesn’t make any sense the same way it makes no sense to remove pens from classrooms, or to limit the capacity of lead mechanical pencils can hold because they were used to fail a test. Or, the same way it makes no sense to ban matches because there have been 36,286 wildfires so far this year. But you know all of this. Which, brings us to the fact that it really has nothing to do with minimizing violent crime after all, now does it?
